Background:
Straws and Shadows,” a thematic collection about life in rural Lithuania between World War I and II, features 52 poems and a foreword by poet Alberto Rios. Praitis, a Pushcart Prize nominee, was a Fulbright Scholar in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2005. She has published two previous collections of verse, “Touch” (Finishing Line Press, 2004) and “Branches” (D-N Publishing, 2007), and a book of biographical prose vignettes, “One Woman's Life” (Diversion Press, 2010). She also co-translated "Still Life" (Calder Wood Press, 2011), a collection of works by Lithuanian poet Sonata Paliulyte.

“Eastern Europe during World War II was a complicated place,” Praitis said. “I will be taking questions regarding the content and the context of the poems in ‘Straws and Shadows.’ The poems explore the complexity of the region's response to the war.”
