Car-Share Program Comes to Campus

Cal State Fullerton to Offer Service This Fall

Cal State Fullerton will launch a vehicle-sharing program for campus members this fall.

The program will be available to students, faculty and staff members for an annual membership fee as part of an agreement with WeCar by Enterprise.

“We believe that this will provide a great service to the students, faculty and staff members who carpool, bike or ride the train or bus to campus,” said Joe Ferrer, director of the university’s Parking and Transportation Services Office. “Through a personal membership with WeCar, campus members will be able to use a vehicle to run errands without having to drive their own vehicle to campus.

“We already offer car and vanpool options, commuter rewards and other incentives to cut the number of vehicles driving daily to campus,” added Ferrer. “This is another option that we’re providing to our campus community to save energy, alleviate the hassle of parking and still be able to leave campus for lunch, doctor or dental appointments and other personal tasks that usually require bringing a vehicle to campus.”

The program can work equally well for students who live on campus, Ferrer noted. Student residents can sign up and use the vehicle for personal appointments, shopping or weekend activities, rather than bringing their own car and paying to park it in a university lot, he added. “What’s even better, the student can share the rental cost with his passengers.”

Participants in the program pay a $35 annual membership fee (first year participants receive a $35 credit) and — depending on the use — an hourly, daily or overnight rental charge. Rates include rental time, fuel, damage waiver and liability.

The program will launch with two mid-size sedans available for use beginning Aug. 20, one week before the start of fall semester classes Aug. 25. More information about the university’s Commuter Choice Program is available online.
