Putting the Focus on Teacher Quality

Public Invited to Documentary Screening

What:           
The public is invited to a free screening and panel discussion of “Mitchell 20: Teacher Quality Is the Answer,” a documentary about teachers at a high-need public school in Arizona who transform their practices and their school through participation in the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification process. The screening is presented by Cal State Fullerton’s College of Education and its Center for Maximizing Teacher Impact.

Who:            
A panel of local teachers and school administrators will discuss their own experiences as they relate to what is presented in the film, with a particular focus on how the national board certification process can be transformative for both teachers and professionals, and also what the process can mean for school improvement.

Panelists include: board-certified educators Kiela Bonelli, principal of Desert Springs Middle School in the Palm Springs Unified School District; Renae Bryant, teacher, Corona-Norco Unified School District; Lisa Robles, teacher, Miles Avenue Elementary School, Los Angeles Unified School District; Jackie Counts, English specialist, Anaheim Union High School District; Carey Tillery, educational services coordinator, Corona-Norco Unified School District; and Haydee Rodriguez, teacher, Central Union High School District of El Centro. Rodriguez is a member of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Board of Directors.

“This film offers a poignant look at the commitment shared by this group of dedicated teachers at a time when public education faces much scrutiny,” said Mark Ellis, chair and associate professor of secondary education. Sponsored by the National Education Association, with additional support from the University of Phoenix, the 77-minute film was produced through a partnership between Randy Murray Productions and the Arizona K-12 Center.
