Sociology Week Focuses on Human Trafficking and Justice Issues

What:     

Cal State Fullerton hosts Sociology Week March 12-14. Event highlights include talks on sex trafficking and transgender issues. Events are free and open to the public.

Why:     

“We are highlighting human trafficking and transgender issues because we want to raise awareness about these issues that affect lives,” said Jorge Fontdevila, assistant professor of sociology and an event organizer.

Monday, March 12
10 a.m. — “Human Trafficking Awareness” presented by Maria Suarez, a human trafficking survivor

11:30 a.m.  — “Human Trafficking: A Journey Through Hope and Healing” delivered by Je’net Kreitner, founder and chief executive officer of Grandma's House of Hope in Orange County

Tuesday, March 13
10 a.m. – “These Are the Things That Are Stored in Your Heart: Femicide, Memorialization and Indigenous Women’s Organizing in Mexico and Beyond” with Molly Talcott, Cal State Los Angeles professor of sociology

11:30 a.m. — “Transgender Issues in Society” presented by activist Colle Carpenter

Wednesday, March 14
10 a.m. — Panel discussion on “What to Do With a Degree in Sociology:
Career and Graduate School Options” with Berna Torr and Carter Rakovski, both CSUF assistant professors of sociology, in the Gabrielino Room

11:30 a.m. — “Graduate School Admissions" with Kaplan Standardized Test Services, in the Gabrielino Room

2:30 p.m. — "Graduate Student Thesis Research” presented by sociology graduate students, in the Hetebrink Room

4 p.m. — “Statement of Purpose Workshop” with Debbie Darling of CSUF’s Career Center, in the Hetebrink Room
