When:
Wednesday, April 18
6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where:
Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Student Union, Portola Pavilion
800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton, 92831
Who:
Benjamin Hubbard, Cal State Fullerton emeritus professor of comparative religion, will introduce the symposium and provide opening remarks.
The plenary address will be delivered by Richard Flory, associate director of the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at USC. “Since 1992, significant demographic and political events have altered the landscape of Los Angeles and of the faith community,” Flory noted. “While faith groups have always participated to varying degrees in the public sphere, over the past two decades they have become expected partners in dealing with social issues. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the number of faith-based nonprofit organizations and a diversity of approaches to the problems they seek to address. In this talk, I will detail these developments and argue that while the public presence of the faith community has dramatically increased over the last 20 years, it has yet to reach its potential as a moral voice in the public square of the Los Angeles region.”
Responding to Flory’s lecture will be Jeanette Reedy Solano, CSUF assistant professor of comparative religion.
Ananda Guruge, CSUF lecturer in comparative religion and a former Sri Lankan ambassador, will provide closing remarks.
