Envisioning the New Normal in Higher Education

Rising costs, rising expectations — what does it mean for universities across the nation?

On Wednesday, Feb. 22, California State University, Fullerton, will further the dialogue on some of the most pressing issues facing higher education by hosting a daylong President’s Symposium, “Appraising the Future, Understanding Costs: Envisioning the New Normal in Higher Education.”

National experts on education, politics and public policy will address state and national goals for degree attainment, cost analyses of higher education, e-learning and challenges to current educational models, as well as the political landscape for higher education. In addition, poll results showing how Orange County business leaders feel about costs for higher education will be presented.

The 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. President’s Symposium will be held at the Fullerton Marriott at Cal State Fullerton, located on the southeast corner of the campus.

Speakers include:

  • Jeffrey Selingo, vice president and editorial director, Chronicle of Higher Education
  • Robert Shireman, chief consultant, California Competes and former deputy undersecretary of education in the Obama administration
  • William Tierney, director of the Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis, USC
  • Jane Wellman, executive director, National Association of System Heads and founding director, Delta Project on Postsecondary Costs, Productivity and Accountability
  • F. King Alexander, president, Cal State Long Beach
  • Willie J. Hagan, interim president, Cal State Fullerton
  • Keith Boyum, interim executive assistant to the president and emeritus professor of political science, Cal State Fullerton
  • Raphael Sonenshein, executive director, Pat Brown Institute, Cal State Los Angeles
  • Stephen J. Stambough, associate professor of political science and chair of the Division of Politics, Administration and Justice, Cal State Fullerton
