Poets Mark National Poetry Month at CSUF April 24

What/Who:     

In celebration of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month and National Poetry Month, an April 24 event is planned at Cal State Fullerton. Poets Rachelle Cruz, Matthew Shenoda and Traci Kato-Kiriyama will discuss and recite their poetry. The event is free and open to the public.

Noon-12:50 p.m. “CSUF and Community Reading: Featuring Rachelle Cruz.”

Cruz is an Emerging Voices and Kundiman Fellow and writer for Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation writer. Her chapbook, “Self-Portrait as Rumor and Blood,” was published this year. Her work has appeared in Muzzle Magazine, Splinter Generation and KCET's Departures Series, “Inlandia: A Literary Journey.” She hosts “The Blood-Jet Writing Hour” Radio Show on Blog Talk Radio.

1-2:15 p.m. “Poetry, Ecology and Social Change: a Reading by Matthew Shenoda."

Shenoda is CalArts’ assistant provost for equity and diversity. His debut collection of poems, “Somewhere Else,” was named one of 2005’s debut books of the year by Poets & Writers Magazine. It also is the winner of the inaugural Hala Maksoud Award for Emerging Voices, as well as a 2006 American Book Award. His latest collection, “Seasons of Lotus, Seasons of Bone,” was published in 2009, and he has been nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize.

2:30-3:45 p.m. “Words & Community Identity: Reading and Writing With Traci Kato-Kiriyama.”

Kato-Kiriyama is a multidisciplinary performing artist, author, arts educator, community organizer and founder/director of the Tuesday Night Project and the “1st and 3rd Tuesday Night Café,” one of the longest-running free public arts series in downtown Los Angeles' Little Tokyo. As a performer, she participates in a range of performance art, acting, music projects and puppetry. “Signaling,” her debut collection of poetry, was published in 2010.
