Teeing Up for Scholarships

Annual Hispanic Golf Tournament Benefits CSUF Students

What:

The 25th annual Hispanic Scholarship Golf Tournament, which raises funds for Cal State Fullerton students, will take place April 20. The event is open to the public.

When:

April 20
9 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Where:

Black Gold Golf Club
1 Black Gold Drive, Yorba Linda, 92886

Why:

“Today’s economic climate makes it tough for low-income students to pursue their college degrees, so we want to help as much as possible,” said Silas H. Abrego, interim vice president for student affairs and a tournament founder. “Paying for a college education continues to be challenging. The cost of higher education has increased rapidly, but the family median income has not kept pace. And, affordability still is a concern for many students. The tournament is one way we support them.”

Donations:

This year’s tournament goal is to raise $125,000. Fees to participate in the tournament are $375 per person to play and have lunch and dinner. A foursome is $1,500. Dinner alone is $50 and platinum-level sponsorship is $10,000.

Background:

The first tournament in 1987 raised $12,000. Last year, the tournament raised $108,000, and 80 students each received a $1,500 scholarship. To date, about 1,000 students have benefited from the scholarships, which have totaled more than $1 million.

Additional:

Tournament organizers are encouraging students and alumni who have benefited from the scholarships to join the event’s Facebook page and post their stories about how the scholarships helped them.
