From Magic to the ‘Art of Living’

Wide Range of Topics Offered in Free Summer Lecture Series

What: Free public lectures on topics that explore heroic pursuits, practical matters and issues of the day are being offered this summer by Cal State Fullerton’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.The university affinity group of retired and semiretired individuals is dedicated to the pursuit of lifelong learning.

  • July 19 — “The Law of Unintended Consequences and the Agricultural Revolution” by Jerry Florman, retired pharmacist and member, OLLI/UCI Science Committee
  • Aug. 2 — “A Warm Culture in an Inhospitably Cold Environment: Experiences in Teaching Inuit Language Teachers” by Bertha Segal-Cook, trainer of language educators and OLLI member

  • July 21 — “The Art and History of Magic” by David O. Thorsen, emeritus professor of music and the Magic Castle’s resident magic instructor
  • Aug. 4 — “The Inuit—Experiencing Family Life in an Inhospitably Cold Environment” by Berta Segal-Cook, trainer of language educators, OLLI member

  • June 30 — “Is Effective Ethics Possible in a Secular Society?” by Hank Smith
  • July 14 — Lyon Air Museum at the OC's John Wayne Airport and the history of air navigation will be addressed by Tom Matthey, retired captain, U.S. Air Force and docent of the Lyon Air Museum.
  • July 28 — “A Better Understanding of Islam and American Muslims” by Hussam Ayloush, director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Greater Los Angeles chapter
  • Aug. 11 — “Philosophy and the Art of Living” by Jeff Mason, CSUF lecturer in philosophy
