Helping Nonprofits Succeed

Summer School for Nonprofits July 11-15

Grant writing, promotion, financial reporting and analysis and capital campaigns will be among the topics addressed at Cal State Fullerton’s sixth annual Summer School for Nonprofits July 11-15. Attendees may select to attend one day or the entire week.

“Strengthening nonprofit capacity is a win-win for the community and the campus,” said Kathleen Costello, assistant director of the Center for Internships and Community Engagement. “Tapping into the university’s teaching and research abilities to benefit our partner agencies will help them to serve our communities better. And that will make for richer learning experiences for our students when they are placed in agencies for internships or service learning.”

Cal State Fullerton’s Center for Internships and Community Engagement, the Gianneschi Center for Nonprofit Research, and the Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations sponsor the event. Advance registration is required for all of the programs.

The Monday program, “2011 Federal Grants Supermarket,” will provide up-to-date information on federal grants, sources of public funding, grant-writing tips, the role of a congressional office and Recovery Act/Stimulus opportunities and will be presented by a representative from the office of U.S. Rep. Ed Royce. Tuesday’s daylong program, “Tax Seminar for Nonprofit and Faith-Based Organizations,” is sponsored by Michelle Steel, vice chair of the State Board of Equalization. Both programs run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (lunch not included) and are free. Parking is $8 per day.

A variety of topics are covered in the classes offered Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, including social media, planned giving, data mining, special events, time/life management, managing volunteers, lobbying and advocacy, program evaluation and strategic partnerships. Thursday’s attendees can opt for a full-day program on “Nonprofit Accounting and Auditing.” Cost to attend Wednesday-Friday is $85 per day and includes parking. Classes are offered from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. with a 90-minute break at midday (lunch not included).

Specific program information, additional information and the registration form are available on the summer school website. For more information, call 657-278-5376 or email kcostello@fullerton.edu. Deadline to register is July 1.
