University to Conduct Emergency Exercise, Shelter-in-Place Drills
Local and County Police and Fire to Join in Active Shooter Scenario
July 25, 2011 :: No. 1
What:
Cal State Fullerton’s University Police will conduct an active shooter/bombing exercise Friday, July 29, to test campus readiness and crisis response. Local and county fire and police responders will join the exercise, while members of the campus community will take part in a shelter-in-place drill.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency defines an active shooter as “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and other populated area. In most cases, active shooters use firearms, and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly.”
When:
9 a.m.-noon, Friday, July 29
Where:
The exercise will take place in the Eastside Parking Structure, located just north of the Fullerton Marriott.

Additional:
Taking part in the exercise will be approximately 30-40 volunteers serving as “victims” for the drill, as well as members of the campus Medical Emergency Response Team, the emergency management team, the campus police force and parking and transportation officials.
Why:
“Our No. 1 job is to keep those who work, study and visit the campus as safe as possible. One such way is to prepare and practice for emergency and crisis situations,” according to Sue Fisher, campus emergency management coordinator and the individual most responsible for the planning leading to Friday’s drill. “The scenario we’ve developed for Friday will help assess the readiness of our responders and their ability to work with external responding agencies.”
