Cal State Fullerton’s Reading Department dedicates its Reading Center in honor of the late Hazel Miller Croy, emeritus professor of education and founder of the university’s reading education program.

When:
Saturday, April 2
10:30 a.m.

Where:
Reading Center, Cal State Fullerton

Education-Classroom Building, Room 24

800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton, 92831

Additional:
Current and former campus reading educators and Reading Department alumni have raised $36,600 for an endowed scholarship in honor of Croy, who joined the campus in 1960 and six years later founded the master’s program in reading. The endowment enables the naming of the Reading Center after Croy, who retired in 1975 and died in 1993. Money raised will support scholarships for students in the master’s degree program in reading, as well as reading instruction for children and adults from the community, plus the purchase of equipment and supplies for the center.

Background:
Operated under the College of Education’s Reading Department, the Reading Center provides individualized tutoring to K-12 students and adults in need of improving their reading skills. Master’s students in the reading education program provide one-on-one tutoring as part of their graduate work.

Quote:
“Honoring Dr. Croy is long overdue,” said Deborah Osen Hancock, emeritus professor of education and Croy campaign steering committee chair. Hancock, who was hired by Croy in 1969 and retired in 1992, added: “Croy was ahead of her time — a visionary who founded the graduate reading program on campus and who was a pioneer in preparing reading specialists.”
