Stephen D. Smith, executive director of USC’s Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education, will deliver the third Arthur A. Hansen Lecture at Cal State Fullerton, titled “Auschwitz 2045: What Will Become of the Holocaust?”

About the Speaker:
Stephen D. Smith is involved in Holocaust memorial projects around the world. He founded the UK Holocaust Centre in Nottinghamshire, England, and co-founded the Aegis Trust for the prevention of crimes against humanity and genocide. Smith was the project director responsible for the creation of the Kigali Memorial Centre in Rwanda and provided consultation for the Cape Town Holocaust Centre, where he continues to serve as a trustee. A theologian by training with a particular interest in the impact of the Holocaust on religious and philosophical thought and practice, Smith lectures on issues relating to the history and collective response to the Holocaust, genocide and crimes against humanity. He has taught in Lithuania and been a member of the International Task Force for Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research since its inception in 1998. His work at the USC Shoah Foundation Institute is focused on finding strategies to optimize the effectiveness of the testimonies for education, research and advocacy.

The Hansen Lecture series was created by the university’s Center for Oral and Public History in honor of Arthur A. Hansen, CSUF emeritus professor of history and retired center director. “The lecture series is designed to bring nationally prominent speakers to campus in the field of oral and public history,” said Cora A. Granata, associate center director.
