CSUF Women's Studies Program Hosts Annual Conference April 7

What:
Cal State Fullerton’s Women’s Studies Program is hosting its annual Gender Research Conference April 7. More than 35 presenters from across the state will give talks on research ranging from Iranian women in art, to censorship of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender magazines in Los Angeles.

Who:
Dana Collins, Cal State Fullerton assistant professor of sociology, will deliver the 12:30 p.m. keynote address. She will speak about her research in the gay community in Manila.
Other speakers include Cal State Fullerton faculty members Rebecca E. Dolhinow, associate professor of women’s studies, speaking on immigrant women's activism at 9 a.m.; and Heather Osborne-Thompson, assistant professor of radio-TV-film, speaking on the “feminist imagination” in Showtime's women's comedies at 2 p.m.
In addition, Cal State Fullerton undergrad Eliza Ramirez will speak on gender roles as seen through heterosexual and feminist porn at 10:45 a.m.; and graduate students Melissa Warstadt, Patrick Covert and Sarah Corp will make presentations on gender stereotyping and ethnicity, “searching for Mt. Olympus in Los Angeles” and a look at the grotesque woman in Francis Beaumont's “The Knight of the Burning Pestle,” respectively, at 2 p.m.
Screening:
The 2007 documentary “Crossed Wires,” which tells the story of Tyler Morgan, a 38-year-old female-to-male transsexual, will be screened at 3:45 p.m. Brent M. Foster, CSUF assistant professor of communications, produced and directed the 49-minute film. “Tyler’s appearance and story provide a glimpse into a troubled past and an uncertain future,” Foster said. “He is optimistic and upbeat all while shrouding a depression of inadequacy. ... He wishes he could live a normal life.”
