‘Antibiotics: The Struggle to Save the Miracle’

CSUF Outstanding Professor Discusses Research Battling Drug-Resistant Bacteria

What:
Research in the battle against drug-resistant bacteria is the subject of “Antibiotics: The Struggle to Save the Miracle” presented April 21 at Cal State Fullerton’s Natural Sciences and Mathematics Colleagues Colloquium.

Who:
Presenter Marcelo Tolmasky, professor of biological science and CSUF’s 2010 Outstanding Professor Award recipient, has garnered more than $3 million in grants in support of his research in this area. The director of CSUF’s Center for Applied Biotechnology Studies and the Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training Program, Tolmasky has taught on campus since 1995 and has studied antibiotic resistance since the mid-1980s.

When:
Thursday, April 21

7 a.m. registration, 7:30-9:30 a.m. program

Where:
Coyote Hills Golf Course

1440 E. Bastanchury Road,
Fullerton, 92835

Quote:
“The advent of antibiotics was a quantum leap in our capabilities to treat infections,” Tolmasky said. Their success merited the nickname ‘miracle drugs,’ but the miracle may not last forever, according to the researcher. “Pathogenic bacteria learned to resist the action of antibiotics and are becoming resistant faster than new antibiotics are found or created,” he added. “The situation has become sort of an arms race. Can we win or, at least, keep up?”

Cost:
$10 for the public and includes breakfast. Free for NSM Colleagues members.
