Discussing Education

Partnerships for Educational Achievement Topic of March 18 Forum

What:
In an effort to influence policies and practices that raise academic opportunities for students in Orange County’s schools, Los Amigos of Orange County and Cal State Fullerton are holding “Education Conversations” with parents, community groups and educational leaders. The event is free and open to the public.

When:
Friday, March 18
8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Where:
Titan Student Union, Cal State Fullerton
800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton, 92831

Additional:
The day will begin with a brief demographic overview of Latino English learner students in Orange County by Minerva Chavez, Cal State Fullerton assistant professor of secondary education. Her presentation will be followed by a roundtable panel discussion by educational leaders and parents.

In addition, the leaders of various school districts in the county will lead table discussions about building pathways for community and parent groups to effectively and productively engage with their local school systems. The university’s Chicana & Chicano Resource Center is providing bilingual guides for participants, and the Ballet Folklorico de CSUF will perform at noon.

Why:
“We are seeking to explore educational policies and practices that hinder and/or promote school climates for academic success of Latino students,” said Amin David, president of Los Amigos. “We are specifically seeking to bring participants together to develop a countywide communications network to develop community-based knowledge of the policies that shape these processes for students, whether such policies are uniform within and across districts, and the mechanisms that guide these policies.”
