Cal State Fullerton Presentations Focus on Preparing Educators for Digital Age

What:
Two CSUF credential students, the university’s director of science education and a professor of elementary and bilingual education will make presentations focusing on readying future educators for the 21st-century digital classroom at the Feb. 14 California State University Summit “Transformative Change in the Preparation of Teachers.” The CSU is hosting the invitation-only summit in collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences and other leading national educational organizations and philanthropic foundations.

CSUF Speaker Schedules:
1-2:30 p.m. — “Preparation of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Teachers Across Grade Levels.”
Victoria B. Costa, director of science education, will discuss “Roadmap of STEM Teacher Recruitment and Preparation,” focusing on the university’s teacher credential programs that promote, develop and engage future STEM teachers. The math and science focus reflects Cal State Fullerton’s heightened emphasis on increasing student interest in the STEM fields — one of the university’s initiatives for 2010-11.
1-2:30 p.m. — Hallie Yopp Slowik, professor of elementary and bilingual education, will present “Promoting Literacy From Early Development Through College Proficiency.”
8-9:30 a.m. and 4-5 p.m. — Technology Showcase
Teacher candidates Joelle Carr of Claremont, and Katy Erickson of Tustin, will discuss the use of digital resources to support classroom learning and student achievement and will highlight two CSUF teacher preparation programs: Erickson will discuss the “1-to-1” Laptop Program, in which teacher candidates learn creative technologies to teach in a digital classroom; and Carr will discuss the Single Subject Middle School Mathematics Science Digital Credential Program, which helps candidates develop understanding and skills in teaching science and mathematics with 21st-century technology and digital media.

9:30 a.m. — Welcoming remarks by CSU Chancellor Charles Reed and Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Schools
9:45 a.m. — “The Nature and Significance of Transformative Change in Preparing Teachers— by opening keynote speaker Martha Kanter, U.S. under secretary of education
Noon — “Transformative Teacher Education: Exemplary Designs and Significant Initiatives” by Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun professor of education at Stanford University
Additional:
Innovative designs reflecting the best of teacher preparation practices nationally have been instituted on many CSU campuses, including Cal State Fullerton, and will be highlighted at the summit. Special areas of focus will be on preparing teachers to close achievement gaps and for college and career readiness, with particular attention to the preparation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, 21st-century digital knowledge and skills.
