Engineers to Honor Biologist
Cal State Fullerton Educator to Be Recognized by OC Engineering Council
Feb. 17, 2011 :: No. 82
Robert A. Koch, acting dean of Cal State Fullerton’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, will be honored Feb. 21 with the Orange County Engineering Council’s 2011 Distinguished Engineering Merit Award.
The presentation will be made during the organization’s Engineers Week awards banquet at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach.
Koch, professor of biological science and department chair for six years, has served on campus since 1975. He has garnered more than $4.5 million in research grants and partnered with other faculty members to bring in additional funds. He has served on a number of campus committees, including the Planning, Resources and Budget Committee, which he chaired in 2007-08.
The campus veteran was involved in the founding of the Center for Applied Biotechnology, as well as the Program for Applied Biotechnology Studies, a three-campus consortium offering a professional science master’s degree with an emphasis in applied biotechnology. Koch also was involved with the university’s research training programs — the Minority Access to Research Careers, the Beckman Scholars Program and the Beckman-Coulter Research Scholars Program.
Last year, Koch received the Andreoli Faculty Service Award from the California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology and is a past recipient of the CSU Faculty Research Award. In addition to his service on campus, Koch is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Cell Biology, Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native American Scientist and Southern California Society for Microscopy and Microanalysis.
The Anaheim resident earned his doctorate in biological science from Florida State University.
The Orange County Engineering Council is an umbrella organization representing numerous engineering, scientific and technological societies and corporations in Orange County.
