Conference Focuses on Domestic Violence and the Media

Women’s Center Presents Oct. 29 Community Event

What:     
Cal State Fullerton Women’s Center presents its 11th annual Domestic Violence Conference, “Media and Interpersonal Violence: Changing Social Norms,” about how media and technology affect personal relationships. The free event is open to the public.

Speakers:     

  • 9:30-10:30 a.m. Robert Diaz, community educator, Human Options Women’s Shelter, “Violence in Relationships in the Media”
  • 10:30-11:30 a.m. Dawn Foor, program coordinator, Community Services Program, Sexual Assault Program, “Things That Ought to Make You Mad”
  • 1:30-2:30 p.m. Detective Kathryn Hamel, Fullerton Police Department, “Cyber-Crime and Tech Abuse in Relationships”

Additional:     
Susan Leavy, Women’s Center director, said the conference is designed to give attendees information about:

  • Becoming familiar with the effect technology and media have on the incidence of violence in interpersonal relationships;
  • Discovering how the fantasy woven by television, movies and advertising might influence unhealthy relationships;
  • Learning to analyze print, television and cyber-media with respect to covert and manipulative messages;
  • Increasing understanding of technology’s plusses and minuses regarding social pressure, GPS potential and instant communication.
