Students, Families Invited to Special Information Fair Nov. 5

What: Cal State Fullerton’s Division of Student Affairs, the California State University Chancellor’s Office and six CSU additional campuses host a Nov. 5 college fair, “Journey to Success: How to Get to College Workshops for Asian American and Pacific Islander Families and Students.” The event on the Cal State Fullerton campus is open to students in 6th- through 12th-grades and community colleges, as well as their families.

When: Saturday, Nov. 5
8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Additional: The fair will include workshops on how to prepare and pay for college, information on CSU requirements for admission and application processes, as well as a student and parent panel discussions, and information booths from local colleges and universities.

Why? The outreach event is the result of the CSU Asian American and Pacific Islander Initiative with the objective to improve college access for Vietnamese, Filipino and Korean students from underserved communities, said Howard Wang, CSUF associate vice president for student affairs. Wang noted that according to the latest U.S. Census data:

  • Asian American and Pacific Islander students make up 13.5 percent of California's population;
  • the Asian American and Pacific Islander population consists of 48 ethnic sub-groups with 300 languages spoken;
  • among adults 25 years or older who have not attended college, 65.8 percent are Cambodian, 51.1 percent are Vietnamese, 29.3 percent are Korean, 23.8 percent are Filipino, 57.9 percent are Tongan, 56.8 percent are Samoan, 53 percent are Guamanian and 49.3 percent Native Hawaiian; and
  • among adults 25 or older who attended college but did not complete degrees, 47 percent are Guamanian, 50 percent are Native Hawaiian, 54 percent are Tongan, 58.1 percent are Samoan, 47.5 percent are Hmong, 46.5 percent are Laotian, 42.9 percent are Cambodian, 33.7 percent are Vietnamese, 26.6 percent are Filipino and 18.1 are Korean.
