Area Teachers, Students Gathering at CSUF to Study Genetics

MEDIA ADVISORY

Teachers and students from area high schools and community colleges will gather at Cal State Fullerton Nov. 13, 14 and 20 to conduct genetic experiments on how plants resist disease.

The three-day research event is designed to expose both teachers and students to the rigors and requirements of research, and is part of university’s Howard Hughes Medical Institute-supported program to find and recruit more biological science researchers.

The campus program is funded by a $1.2 million grant awarded in 2008 to Maria C. Linder, CSUF professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and is an example of Cal State Fullerton’s initiative to expand its efforts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

As part of the campus program, high school and community college students spend some time each summer on campus conducting research in the laboratory of a campus faculty member. In addition, CSUF students are selected to take part in an intensive two-year program of mentored lab research, weekly workshops and poster presentations at national and local conferences.
