Cal State Fullerton Hosts April 28 Poetry Readings

What:

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month and National Library Week, Cal State Fullerton’s Pollak Library is hosting poetry workshops, readings by local and nationally known poets and public readings in English and other languages.

11 a.m.
Writing workshop – “Killing Your Darlings or How to Use Feedback to Make a Better Poem,” presented by Cal State Fullerton graduate student Benjamin Russell Perry

Noon
Poetry reading by Irena Praitis, professor of English, comparative literature and linguistics, and graduate student J.D. Isip.

1 p.m.
Featured poet – Oliver de la Paz, author of “Names Above Houses,” “Furious Lullaby” (SIU Press 2001, 2007) and the forthcoming “Requiem for the Orchard” (University of Akron Press, 2010). He is a winner of the Akron Prize for poetry and co-chairs the advisory board of Kundiman, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of Asian American poetry. De la Paz, who teaches at Western Washington University, also is a recipient of a New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship Award.

Writing workshop – “The Poet’s Melodious Metronome: How to Create Musical Sonic Devices Within a Line of Verse,” by graduate student Shayna Cunningham

3 p.m.
