Congresswoman Sanchez Bringing Federal Agency Director to Orange County

Who/What:

The nation’s first female director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Regina Dugan, will visit Cal State Fullerton Friday morning to speak to students and faculty members about her agency and careers in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, who chairs the Terrorism, Unconventional Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee, is coordinating the visit and will be introducing Dugan.

When:

9:30-11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3

Where:

Portola Pavilion, Titan Student Union
800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton, CA 92831

Background:

Dugan has served as director of DARPA since her appointment in July 2009 by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. She led a counterterrorism task force for the Department of Defense in 1999 and from 2001-03 served as special adviser to the Army’s vice chief of staff. Dugan was a DARPA program manager from 1996-2000, responsible for developing sensor technologies that could be used to detect land mines. Prior to her appointment as director of the agency, she co-founded Dugan Ventures, a niche investment firm, serving as president and CEO. She is the co-author of “Engineering Dynamics” (1996, Prentice Hall) and the inventor or co-inventor of multiple patents and patents pending. Dugan earned a doctorate in mechanical engineering at Caltech, plus master’s and bachelor’s degrees at Virginia Tech.

More:

DARPA was founded in 1958 as a response to the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik. The agency’s mission is to maintain the technological superiority of the U.S. military and prevent technological surprise from harming the nation’s national security by sponsoring revolutionary, high-payoff research bridging the gap between fundamental discoveries and their military use. One example: DARPA’s nurturing of the forerunner of the Internet.
