Cal State Fullerton Among Leaders for Graduating Hispanics

Cal State Fullerton is second in the state and sixth in the nation for the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanic students, as reported in this week’s issue of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education’s “Top 100.”

The annual rankings are based on degrees conferred between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2008, as derived from the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System program.

Cal State Fullerton’s Class of 2008 included 1,625 Hispanics who earned bachelor’s degrees and 192 who earned master’s degrees. The magazine ranks Cal State Fullerton 32nd in the nation for the number of master’s degrees awarded to Hispanics.

For bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics in specific majors, Cal State Fullerton ranks:

  • first in communications
  • first in parks, recreation, leisure and fitness studies
  • second in public administration
  • sixth in business and marketing
  • sixth in education
  • sixth in area studies
  • seventh in psychology
  • eighth in protective services
  • eighth in visual and performing arts

Overall, Hispanics constitute 28 percent of Cal State Fullerton’s student body of more than 37,000. Since 2004, Cal State Fullerton has been designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, and CSUF President Milton A. Gordon currently serves as chairman of the board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.
