How to Analyze the Media

Experts Discuss Media Literacy in Series of April Lectures

Learning how to read and analyze what you see in the media is the idea behind a series of three community lectures on media literacy sponsored by Cal State Fullerton’s College of Communications.

“We want our students, as well as the community, to understand how the media operate and how people can be more discriminating readers and viewers,” said Philippe Perebinossoff, assistant professor of radio-TV-film and program organizer.

W. James Potter, professor of communications at University of California, Santa Barbara, will begin the free series Thursday, April 9, with an introduction to media literacy, “What Do We Think We Know About Our World and How Have the Media Shaped Those Perceptions?” Potter has authored 15 books on media literacy and is editor of the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Media Violence. His program is from 2:30-3:45 p.m. in Room 307 of Langsdorf Hall.

Brian Lowry, a media columnist and television critic for Variety, as well as a former reporter covering the television industry for the Los Angeles Times, will speak on “The Need for Media Literacy in Today’s TV- News/Infotainment Marketplace” from 4-5:15 p.m. Monday, April 20, in the Titan Student Union. Lowry has been a contributor to NPR and written two companion guides to the Fox series “The X Files.”

Lindy DeKoven, founder and CEO of DeKoven Coaching, will focus on reading the messages the media convey about women, during her 4-5:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, talk in the university’s Ruby Gerontology Center. DeKoven formerly served in leadership positions with NBC and for several years owned her own television production company. She currently serves, by appointment from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, on various state boards.

On-campus parking is $8 per vehicle for the day. Short-term parking also is available. Parking lot and permit machine locations are posted online.
