Cal State Fullerton and the city of Santa Ana will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Grand Central Art Center — the university’s satellite in downtown Santa Ana, where graduate art students create art and live, in the heart of the city’s Artists Village.
Cal State Fullerton’s Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana
Saturday, March 7
Noon to 3 p.m. (2 p.m. ceremony)
Grand Central Art Center
125 N. Broadway, Santa Ana, 92701
Cal State Fullerton President Milton A. Gordon, Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido and Steven Ehrlich of Steven Ehrlich Architects, which created the original award-winning design for the building’s restoration, will be among those making remarks during a brief ceremony at 2 p.m. at the entrance to the building.
The center’s 10th anniversary retrospective, multimedia exhibition, which continues through April 12, will be on display and tours will be offered. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Singah Trio, CSUF string quartet, PEANUT and Big Skin. Flamenco dancers and theatrical presentations by students also are scheduled. Commemorative prints and T-shirts will be available.
A joint venture between the city of Santa and Cal State Fullerton, the Grand Central Art Center occupies a full city block, in a 1924 building that was once home to the city’s grand central market. The building was transformed into a modern, three-level structure that incorporates studio and living space for students, classrooms, galleries and exhibition spaces, a print-making workshop, project room, an 83-seat theater, gift shop and cafe. CSUF Gallery Director Mike McGee and Don Cribb, founder and former president of the Santa Ana Council for Art and Culture, conceived the center in 1994 as the anchor and catalyst for a 10-square block area in the heart of downtown designated as the Artists Village.
