Patrons of the Library Host Sunday Lecture Series

Three Authors to Discuss Books at Cal State Fullerton

Cal State Fullerton’s Patrons of the Library kicks off a three-part lecture series Sunday, Jan. 25, with Ron Carlson, author of “Five Skies.”

“Five Skies” was selected Editors’ Choice by the New York Times in 2007. Carlson, director of UCI’s Master of Fine Arts Creative Program, has written short stories for the New Yorker, Harper’s, Esquire and Gentlemen’s Quarterly.

Jackson Putnam, Cal State Fullerton emeritus professor of history, is the guest speaker for the second lecture in the series, Sunday, Feb. 22. Putnam will discuss his book “Jess: The Political Career of Jesse Marvin Unruh,” published in 2005, and his current research exploring some of today’s dilemmas in California politics.

Culminating the series and speaking Sunday, March 29, is Raphael Sonenshein, chair and professor of political science at Cal State Fullerton. Sonenshein is the author of the 1994 book “Politics in Black and White: Race and Power in Los Angeles” and “The City at Stake: Secession, Reform and the Battle for Los Angeles,” published by 2004. He just returned from France, where he had been serving as the Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair in American Studies at the University of Paris 8’s Geopolitics Institute.

All lectures are held at 2 p.m. in Room 130 of the Pollak Library. The authors’ books will be available for purchase following the lectures.

Public tickets for the series are $35 or $15 per lecture. Students can attend individual lectures for $7 each. Parking is free. To reserve tickets or for additional information, call 714-870-7208 or 714-526-3617.
