Cal State Fullerton hosts “Grandparent Conference: Intergenerational Connections,” a free conference designed to meet the needs of grandparents in the 21st century by addressing critical issues, distributing information and linking grandparents to community resources.
Saturday, Sept. 19
9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Fullerton Arboretum (northeast corner of Cal State Fullerton)
“The main reason in offering this conference is to begin to link the resources from the university, the community and public together,” said Joseph A. Weber, chair and associate professor of sociology and coordinator of the university’s Gerontology Academic Program. “This will be a wonderful start in bringing university professionals, service providers, community agencies and grandparents together. It is hoped that this conference will be the first of many”
Cal State Fullerton’s Gerontology Academic Program and the Sociology, Psychology and Anthropology departments.
Weber, one of the conference organizers, said professors of sociology, gerontology, psychology and anthropology have been working to produce the event, which is being funded by a university Mission and Goals initiative. The group also plans to begin a grandparent research project and offer a future course on grandparent-grandchild relationships.
The conference will address topics that concern grandparents, such as legal issues, counseling, nutrition, health, intergenerational activities and gardening. Experts will present information, discuss specific concerns and answer questions.
Throughout the day, Southern California service agencies will staff exhibition booths and distribute resource information.
