Students walking through the Quad at Cal State Fullerton
Cal State Fullerton begins fall semester classes Saturday after jumping to a higher rung on the ladder of “America’s Best Colleges.”
CSUF moved up to No. 8 — from No. 10 — in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Top Public Schools: Master’s Universities” in the West ranking. It shares that slot with Cal Poly Pomona and Sonoma State University. This category highlights public institutions that award bachelor’s and master’s degrees, but few doctorates, if any.
“In these challenging times, it’s particularly gratifying to see Cal State Fullerton recognized for our continuing efforts to provide a high-quality education for the diverse student population we serve,” said CSUF President Milton A. Gordon.
“America’s Best Colleges, 2010 Edition” is expected on newsstands Aug. 25.
In the edition’s broader “Master’s Universities (West)” category, incorporating both public and private institutions, Cal State Fullerton ranks 32nd — up from 39th — among 126 campuses in the West selected for the list.
CSUF shares the No. 32 spot with four other institutions: Cal Poly Pomona, Sonoma State, LeTourneau University (Texas) and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas).
Overall, 572 universities in four geographic regions throughout the nation are included.
The rankings are based on “widely accepted indicators of excellence,” as reported in the magazine. The characteristics measured and their percentages of the overall score in this category are: peer assessment (25%), graduation and retention rates (25%), faculty resources (20%), student selectivity (15%), financial resources (10%) and alumni giving (5%).
Cal State Fullerton also is included among the magazine’s list of institutions with the most campus commuters.
Harvard and Princeton share the No. 1 slot on U.S. News & World Report’s much-publicized list of the nation’s “Best National Universities,” which ranks only those offering doctoral programs.
