Parents of Incoming Freshmen Invited to Orientation Offered in Spanish

A special orientation for Spanish-speaking parents of incoming Cal State Fullerton students will be held June 8 and again on June 10 on campus.

"Parents play a critical role in supporting student success in college. However, parents with limited English skills are often unfamiliar with the American higher education system," said Victor M. Rojas Jr., project manager of special programs. "As a result, New Student Programs, in conjunction with Title V, has developed a Spanish-language family orientation program - Orientación Familiar," said Rojas.

"This program invites Spanish-speaking parents of first-time freshmen to attend an orientation to receive information and resources entirely in Spanish regarding financing education, career and major exploration, and supporting student academic and social success," he added. "The program also offers parents and incoming freshman a resource fair where they can obtain information about different clubs and programs on campus."

Last year, a one-day event was held and attended by 540 parents, Rojas said. "It has been expanded to two days, due to incredible demand."

Cal State Fullerton's student population is 28 percent Hispanic, per the latest census.

The free four-hour orientation sessions will be held in the Titan Student Union at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8, and at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 10.

The sessions are supported with funds from the U.S. Department of Education. Cal State Fullerton is in the fourth year of a five-year multipronged effort dubbed "Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building as a Hispanic Serving Institution" that is receiving Title V grant funding of $2.3 million from the Department of Education.
