How to Guide a Son or Daughter Along the Path to College

CSUF's Talent Search Program Hosts April 26 Bilingual Parent Meeting

Parents of students participating in Cal State Fullerton's Talent Search Program will get information and advice on how to help their sons and daughters enroll in college Saturday, April 26, during a special program at the Tiger Woods Learning Center, 520 N. Gilbert, in Anaheim.

Media representatives are invited to attend the event, which is geared for parents of students in the university's Talent Search Program at Anaheim, Katella, Magnolia and Savanna high schools - all in the Anaheim Union High School District.

Joining the university and the center in sponsoring the April 26 event is the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.

Cal State Fullerton's Talent Search Program identifies and assists high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education.

The free event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and presentations will be given in English and Spanish. Topics include preparing for college admission, financial aid and scholarship opportunities. A panel presentation at 11 a.m. will feature Cal State Fullerton students and other local university and community college students.

"Parents will learn about the importance of a college education and will get everything they need to be informed about sending their son or daughter to college," said Adriana Badillo, director of the campus program. "The goal of the Talent Search Program is to increase the number of students from low-income backgrounds who complete high school to enroll in a higher education institution of their choice."

Cal State Fullerton was awarded a four-year $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support the effort. In October, the program received second-year funding of $226,000.

Cal State Fullerton has partnered with the Anaheim Union High School District, as well as community organizations, to provide the Talent Search Program and outreach services to students and their families. About 600 students in grades nine through 12 at Anaheim, Katella, Magnolia and Savanna high schools currently are served.

Activities for participating students include career counseling, field trips to universities and colleges, museums and cultural centers, after-school tutoring and special workshops for parents.

The Talent Search Program is one of the university's federally funded "TRIO" programs, which focus on a variety of services to help local youths from disadvantaged families pursue higher education. Other TRIO programs at Cal State Fullerton:
