Violinist Hal Grossman has been acclaimed by critics and audiences for his “vibrant tone and superb technique.” As a concerto soloist, Grossman has appeared with American and Canadian orchestras, including the Rochester Philharmonic and the North Carolina, Illinois, Lima, Guelph and Battle Creek symphonies. Grossman’s recital appearances have taken him throughout North America and Europe. Grossman also performed for Prince Charles and Princess Diana in a CBC television and radio broadcast in 1983.
In the U.S., he has been heard on National Public Radio, WQXI New York and WFMT Chicago. Grossman has served as the concertmaster of the Estranach Festival Orchestra in Luxembourg and held positions with the Illinois, Lansing and Boise philharmonics. He has received first prize awards at the prestigious International Cleveland Quartet Competition and the National Fischoff Music Competition. As first violinist of the Oxford String Quartet, Grossman performed throughout the U.S. and Europe and recorded several new works for string quartet.
Grossman holds music performance degrees from the University of Michigan and the Eastman School of Music. His primary studies were with Paul Makanowitzky and Sylvia Rosenberg. He is currently the professor of violin at the Interlochen Arts Academy.
Canadian pianist Robert Koenig has established a career as a collaborative artist and chamber musician. He performs regularly in major centers throughout the world with numerous well-known musicians. Koenig’s recent engagements have included performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, Alice Tully Hall in New York, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, the Seoul Arts Centre, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Louvre Museum in Paris. He has performed with many of today’s leading artists, including Sarah Chang, Hilary Hahn, Pamela Frank, Ida Kafavian, Elmar Oliveira, Sidney Harth, and Aaron Rosand. He has appeared at many festivals, including Aspen, Ravinia, Banff, Campos do Jordão Festival in Brazil, Seattle Chamber Music Festival and Mostly Mozart Festival in New York. From 1992-1999, Koenig was staff pianist at the Juilliard School, and in September 1999, became staff pianist at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. A year later, he was appointed assistant professor of piano and piano chamber music at the University of Kansas, Lawrence.
Koenig began his formal training at the Vancouver Academy of Music with Lee Kumsing and Gwen Thompson and later studied at Banff School of Fine Arts and Academia Chigiana in Siena. During this time he was the recipient of several awards from the Canadian government, including a Canada Council Project Grant. Koenig completed both his bachelors and masters degrees in accompanying at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he studied with Vladimir Sokoloff and chamber music with Felix Galimir and Karen Tuttle.
Ernest Salem, violinist, is professor of music at Cal State Fullerton. He has performed in concerts and recitals across the U.S. and presented master classes at various universities and colleges. Former university affiliations include appointments as a faculty member at Wichita State University, College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and New Mexico State University.
Active as a freelance musician in the Los Angeles area, he has performed with the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony and Las Cruces Symphony. Salem has served as principal second violin of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra and assistant concertmaster of the Texas Chamber and Texas Opera Theater Orchestras. As a chamber musician, Salem has been first violinist with Wichita State’s Fairmount Quartet, a member of the College of St. Benedict’s chamber ensemble, “Pastiche,” and violinist with New Mexico State’s Delphian Trio.
Currently, Salem performs regularly as a chamber musician throughout Southern California. He holds degrees from Michigan State University, University of Houston and University of Minnesota. Included among his teachers are Yfrah Neaman, Fredell Lack and members of the Julliard Quartet. In addition to performance activities, Salem has been published in the American String Teachers Journal and the Long Island Historical Journal.
