Robert J. Michaels
Robert J. Michaels, professor of economics for the Steven G. Mihaylo College of Business and Economics at Cal State Fullerton, has been named the first ever Daniel P. Hann Distinguished Fellow in Economics and Regulation.
The $10,000 award honors a faculty member with a distinguished record of publication and service to the university. It is funded by and named for Hann, a Cal State Fullerton alumnus who earned his bachelor’s degree in economics in 1977 and currently is vice president of Indiana-based Biomet, a medical device manufacturer primarily focused on orthopedic implants.
Michaels has established himself as an expert on energy policy, testifying on a variety of energy issues before such groups as the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy and Power, the Federal Regulatory Commission and the California Public Utilities Commission.
His research has been published in such peer-reviewed journals as Energy Law Journal and the Electricity Journal. His work also is cited in such publications as Bloomberg and Investor’s Business Daily, and Michaels is a correspondent on energy issues for National Public Radio. Michaels is also a sought-after presenter at national and international conferences.
The professor earned his doctorate in economics at UCLA and has served as a consultant and adviser to a number of agencies, as well as an adjunct scholar with the Cato Institute. He is co-editor of the journal Contemporary Economic Policy and was co-editor of the Western Economic Association journal, Contemporary Policy Issues, from 1983-1988.
This fall, Michaels — who joined the Cal State Fullerton faculty in 1968 — is on sabbatical conducting research into the precarious state of renewable energy efforts across the nation. He is investigating why programs in 25 states that require utilities to meet renewable portfolio standards have not achieved their professed purposes and what can be done.
