Violence Prevention Conference Oct. 25 at CSUF

Free Event Features OC Sheriff, Domestic-Violence Experts

What:

“Society’s Role in Creating Victims and Abusers” is the theme of the 10th annual Violence Prevention Conference at Cal State Fullerton.

Who:

The free, public event features remarks by Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and keynote speaker Daniel Jay Sonkin, a licensed marriage and family therapist and author, who has testified as an expert witness in criminal cases involving domestic violence.

When:

Saturday, Oct. 25
8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Titan Student Union, Portola Pavilion
800 N. State College Blvd.
Free parking is available in the Nutwood Parking Structure.

8:30 a.m.

Barbara McDowell, director of Cal State Fullerton Women’s Center/Adult Reentry Center, and Susan “Sam” Buchenau, a Soroptimist International representative, will give welcoming remarks.

8:45 a.m.

Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens will make introductory comments.

9 a.m.

Keynote speaker Daniel Sonkin presents “Creating Victim and Abusers.” His work focuses on the treatment of individuals and couples facing a variety of psychological problems, including domestic violence and child abuse.

10:30 a.m. to noon

“Escaping Violence: A Survivor’s Tale” with Shirley Gellatly of Human Options

“Step Up and Stop It: Including Men in the Conversation” with Susan Leavy of CSUF Women’s Center

“Abuse in the Elder Population –- Suffering in Silence” with Carol Tryon of Human Options

“Family Violence in the Military” with Kimberly Abramson from Counseling Services at USMC Camp Pendleton

Resource Fair featuring information from more than 25 local agencies

Panel on “Trafficking of Women & Children” with Sandra Morgan, Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force; Derek Marsh, lieutenant with the Westminster Police Department; Kirsten Kreymann, Public Law Center; Heidi Thi, Community Service Programs victim advocate; and Special Agent Mark Abend, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Panel on “Dangerously in Love — Dating Violence in the 21st Century” with Shirley Gellatly, Human Options; Rosalina Camacho, CSUF Women’s Center; and Dawn Foor, Community Service Programs

“Pieces of the Puzzle — A Case Management Model” with Alisa Neary, Cal State Fullerton lecturer in human services

“Socio-cultural and Ethnic Issues in Intimate Partner Violence” with Julie Stokes, CSUF chair and professor of Afro-ethnic studies

Sonkin Background:

As an early investigator in the field of family violence, Sonkin has developed a protocol for treating male batterers. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including “Learning to Live Without Violence: A Handbook for Men” and “A Counselor’s Guide to Learning to Live Without Violence.” In addition to his clinical practice in Sausalito, he is an adjunct faculty member in the Counseling Department at Sonoma State University.
