Liederabend 2008: Night Waltzes by Schubert and Sondheim
Guest pianist Michael Schütze presents a gala student showcase with 13 solo singers, as well as guitars, violin, cello and flute. The concert features selections by Austrian master Franz Peter Schubert, including songs and ensembles of love and nature, ghosts and gods, and a chamber music interlude. The program also will feature solos, duets and ensembles by American master Stephen Sondheim, including selections from “Sweeney Todd,” “Into the Woods” and “A Little Night Music.”
Michael Schütze is a faculty member at the Carl-Maria von Weber Conservatory in Dresden, Germany. He has appeared in concert with renowned German artists Olaf Bår, Rene Kollo and singers of the younger German generation. In 2004, he performed at the Central European Festival, and in 2006 debuted with singers from Dresden’s acclaimed opera house (Semperoper) at Novaya Opera in Moscow. Schütze has prepared and accompanied singers for many master classes by major artists such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Rene Kollo, Edith Mathis and Andreas Scholl. He has played in concerts throughout Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, and has performed as a soloist with several orchestras in Germany. Schütze debuted in the United States at the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Music Center, where he was a vocal/piano Fellow for two seasons. He has taught master classes at California State University, Fullerton and at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
