Controlling Greenhouse Gases Is Subject of Professor's Oct. 9 Talk

“Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in California – A Comprehensive Study From Cal State Fullerton,” a collection and ranking of available options, will be presented by Jeff Kuo, professor of civil and environmental engineering. Kuo’s study was funded with a $50,000 California Air Resources Board grant.

“The findings of this project can serve as the basis for a Web site to disseminate and act as a clearinghouse for non-CO2 greenhouse gas control information,” Kuo said. “Employment of an appropriate control technology for a given source would achieve a net reduction in NCGG emissions and in its contribution to climate change.”

Kuo’s study, “Clearinghouse of Technological Options for Reducing Anthropogenic Non-CO2 GHG Emission from All Sectors,” gathered information and literature on technological options for reducing human-caused — but non-carbon dioxide — greenhouse gas emissions from all sources in California, such as automobiles and manufacturing. The options were evaluated for their efficiency, how easily they’re found in the marketplace, their technical availability, how long an option would continue to be effective and cost.

The California Air Resources Board chose Kuo to conduct the study based on his academic credentials and achievements. The researcher has conducted several studies in the U.S. and other countries concerning the environment during his professional and academic career and published more than 80 technical papers.
