'Ask A Mexican' Columnist Signs Books

Gustavo Arellano Reads From His Latest Work Oct. 13

Gustavo Arellano

What:

Gustavo Arellano, O.C. Weekly columnist and author of “¡Ask a Mexican!” (Scribner, 2007) and “Orange County: A Personal History” (Scribner, 2008), will give readings from his latest book, a personal story about growing up in Orange County.

When:

1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13

Where:

Ontiveros Room of Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Student Union

Why:

“Too many people do not know the important role Orange County plays in the United States, and how Orange County has traditionally suppressed its histories that don’t shed a Sunkist light on the past,” said Arellano, whose latest book is a personal story about growing up in Orange County.

“Gustavo will certainly point out how and why Orange County, as a region, has historically contested the idea of ‘cultural vibrancy,’ particularly with Mexican immigrants and Chicanos,” said Erualdo R. González, assistant professor of Chicana and Chicano studies.

Author:

Arellano was born in Anaheim to a tomato canner and an illegal immigrant. His “¡Ask a Mexican!” column in the O.C. Weekly won the 2006 Association of Alternative Newsweeklies award for the best column in a large circulation weekly. It has a circulation of more than 2 million in 36 markets. Arellano also is a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times and has appeared on such programs as “Today,” “Nightline,” NPR’s “On the Media,” “The Situation With Tucker Carlson” and “The Colbert Report.” He received the President’s Award from the Los Angeles Press Club, an Impact Award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition and a 2008 Latino Spirit Award from the California state Legislature for his “exceptional vision, creativity and work ethic.” For more information visit: www.askamexican.net.
