Philanthropic Foundation Names Newest Board Members

Varied Backgrounds and Experience Provide New Perspectives

Business leaders Greg Bunch, Paul Folino, Debra Luther, Henry Mendoza and Steven G. Mihaylo have been elected to the Cal State Fullerton Philanthropic Foundation Board of Governors. Curtis Schlaufman, representing CSUF students as president of Associated Students Inc., also now serves on the board.

The mission of the foundation is to actively promote, pursue and steward private support for the advancement of Cal State Fullerton. It is responsible for the acceptance, receipting, processing and account management of philanthropic gifts to the university.

Upland resident Bunch, vice president, West Coast distribution for Ovation TV, was a four-year starter for the CSUF Titan basketball team during the 1970s. He led the team to victory in the Titan’s first conference championship in 1975-76. He played for one season in the NBA with the New York Knicks. In addition to the foundation board, Greg also serves on the university’s Titan Athletics Club Board of Directors.

Folino of Coto de Caza, president and CEO of Emulex Corp., began his career in sales at the Xerox Corp. Today, Emulex is the No. 1 worldwide market share leader in fibre channel host bus adapters (an adapter that connects a computer to other network or storage devices). He has served on the Mihaylo College of Business and Economics Dean’s Advisory Council, as well as on the boards of a number of other nonprofit institutions. Folino has the distinction of being the only Cal State Fullerton donor with a street on campus named after him.

Luther of Buford, Ga., is president of the largest franchise for Taco Bell Corp. in Atlanta. She and her partner, through their business, Exceptional Restaurant Co., own and oversee 28 Taco Bell, KFC, Long John Silver and Pizza Hut Express restaurants and employ about 700 people. ERC is among the 25 largest woman-owned companies in Atlanta. A Cal State Fullerton graduate, Luther (B.A. business administration – accounting ’80) chairs Taco Bell’s Committee for Community Development, which has raised money for local Boys & Girls Clubs.

In addition to managing the firm, he is responsible for overseeing its auditing and accounting services. With more than 19 years in public accounting, Mendoza deals with both large and small corporations and is experienced in reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission. He also gives of his time to a number of not-for-profit and government programs and is former chair of the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce.

Mihaylo of Reno is the retired chairman and CEO of Inter-Tel Inc. Mihaylo founded the Phoenix-based company in 1969 — the year he graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He guided the company’s evolution from providing business telephone systems to offering complete managed services and software to enable businesses to facilitate communication, and increase customer satisfaction and productivity.

In January, Mihaylo presented the university’s College of Business and Economics with a $30 million gift. His generosity was recognized by the California State University Board of Trustees, which approved naming the college the Steven G. Mihaylo College of Business and Economics. His $30 million gift wasn’t the first to his alma mater. In 2004, Mihaylo donated $4.5 million to the college. His name also graces the campus’s new Steven G. Mihaylo Hall, which opened for classes this month with the start of the fall semester.

Diamond Bar resident Schlaufman, president of Cal State Fullerton’s Associated Students Inc., represents the student body on the foundation board. A political science major, Schlaufman has served in numerous roles in student government. Upon graduation, he hopes to attend law or graduate school.
