Cal State Fullerton opens the fall semester ranked in the top 10 in the West on the U.S. News & World Report's list of "Top Public Universities-Master's."
It's the university's eighth consecutive year at this level, which coincides with a steady rise in the student population during the same period.Since 2000, enrollment at Cal State Fullerton has grown from 28,381 to more than 37,000.
"Through the laudable efforts of our dedicated faculty and staff, we are preserving quality while fulfilling our mission of providing access to higher education forthe diverse students of our region," said CSUF President Milton A. Gordon. "That's a measure of success we welcome."
The newsweekly's "America's Best Colleges, 2009 Edition," available today on newsstands, ranks Cal State Fullerton 10th in the West, along with Sonoma State University.
This section of the rankings highlights public institutions that award master's and bachelor's degrees but few, if any, doctorates.
In the broader "Best Universities-Master's" category, incorporating both public and private institutions, Cal State Fullerton ranks 39th among 126 institutions in the West selected for the list. Overall, 572 universities in four geographic regions throughout the nation are included.
The rankings are based on "widely accepted indicators of excellence," as reported in the magazine. The characteristics measured and their percentages of the overall score in this category are: peer assessment (25%), graduation and retention rates (25%), faculty resources (20%), student selectivity (15%), financial resources (10%) and alumni giving (5%).
Cal State Fullerton is included on the magazine's online lists of the nation's "Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs" and institutions with the most transfer students.
Harvard University tops U.S. News & World Report's much-publicized list of the nation's "Best National Universities," which includes only those offering doctoral programs.
