Five at Cal State Fullerton Named Pre-Doctoral Scholars

Local Residents Among Students Selected for Statewide Program

Five Cal State Fullerton students have been selected as Sally Casanova California Pre-Doctoral Scholars. They are among 76 such scholars named statewide from more than 200 applicants.

The program, created 20 years ago, is designed to increase the pool of university faculty members by supporting the doctoral aspiration of individuals who are current upper-division or graduate students in the CSU. Students chosen for the award are exposed to opportunities to explore and prepare to succeed in doctoral programs by working with CSU and UC faculty members as part of the scholar program.

This year's participants will visit doctoral-granting institutions to explore opportunities for doctoral study, travel to national symposiums or professional meetings in their field and other related activities. Next summer they will take part in a summer research program at a doctoral-granting institution to broaden their exposure to research in their chosen field.

The 2008-09 Cal State Fullerton scholars and their faculty sponsors are:

Angelica Cortes of Anaheim, a graduate student majoring in mathematics
Sponsor: Mark W. Ellis, assistant professor of secondary education

Rebecca Hernandez of Irvine, graduate student studying biology
Sponsor: Darren R. Sandquist, associate professor of biological science

Deepali Mehta of Buena Park, senior chemistry major
Sponsor: Zhuangjie Li, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry

Kylie Nguyen of Fullerton, graduate majoring in social work
Sponsor: David Chenot, assistant professor of social work

Daniel Vidrio of Hacienda Heights, graduate student in history and ethnic studies
Sponsor: Alexandro J. Gradilla, assistant professor of Chicana and Chicano studies
