Scott Hewitt, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Cal State Fullerton, is the newly elected chair of the university's Academic Senate.

The Fullerton resident has served the past two years as vice chair of the faculty advisory body. In addition, he chaired the senate's Ad Hoc Committee on Sustainability during the 2007-08 academic year and also serves on the Academic Senate Sustainability Task Force and the University Sustainability Initiative Study Group.

An Academic Senate member for seven years, Hewitt has been a member-at-large on the group's Executive Committee and active on various other senate committees.

"Scott has been deeply involved in the Academic Senate for many years, so he brings with him experience and knowledge that will serve the campus well," said Diana W. Guerin, professor of child and adolescent studies, who just finished two terms as senate chair.

"His leadership on the issue of sustainability last year is a recent example of his contribution," she said."That work is continuing this year, and I know that Scott is committed to broadening the inclusion of sustainability in the curriculum and in our campus operations."

In addition to his service on the Academic Senate, Hewitt has been vice chair of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department for three years and served on several department committees.

In the arena of scholarship, he has been a reviewer of grants and publications for several major organizations, including the National Science Foundation and American Chemical Society. He has co-edited five textbooks, had 17 articles published and is responsible for bringing in more than $700,000 in grants to the university.

As leader of the Academic Senate, his agenda for the year will dovetail with institutional priorities that deal with faculty hiring, retention and development during a period of budget shortfalls.

Joining Hewitt on the CSUF Academic Senate Executive Committee are: Fullerton resident Jack Bedell, Anthropology Department chair and professor of sociology, as vice chair; Huntington Beach resident Joanne Gass, professor of English, comparative literature and linguistics, as secretary; and Tustin resident Lynda Randall, professor of secondary education, as treasurer.

Members-at-large are: Fullerton resident Kenneth Walicki, associate professor of music; Orange resident Amir Dabirian, the university's chief information technology officer; and Anaheim Hills resident Zvi Drezner, professor of information systems and decision sciences.

Serving on the statewide Academic Senate are: Fullerton resident J. Vincent Buck, emeritus professor of political science; Barry A. Pasternack of Santa Ana, chair and professor of information systems and decision sciences; and Guerin.

Hewitt joined the Cal State Fullerton faculty in 1991 and holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
