Campaign for College Opportunity to Salute 'Save Me a Spot in College' Contest Scholarship Winners and OC 'Champions for College Opportunity'

What: Cal State Fullerton will host a Campaign for College Opportunity program and reception for local scholarship winners of the campaign’s “Save Me a Spot in College” contest and those selected as “Champions for College Opportunity.”
When:

Thursday, July 26, 2007
4-6 p.m. A campus tour is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Where: State Fullerton’s George G. Golleher Alumni House
Who:

Those being honored as “Champions for College Opportunity” are:
Bill Habermehl, superintendent, Orange County Department of Education
Sara Lundquist, vice president, student services, Santa Ana College
Dale Ward, executive vice president, Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce

More than 8,000 California middle and high school students submitted written, poster and radio/TV ad entries answering the question: “Why should California leaders save you and your peers a spot in college?”

The 20 Orange County scholarship winners are:
• Ramneet Ahluwalia, written word, $500, 7th grade, Walker Junior High
• Erin Barlow, written word, $500, 6th grade, Abraham Lincoln Middle School
• Monica Benavides, written word, $500, 11th grade, Capistrano Valley High
• Ana Castillo, written word, $1,000, 9th grade, Capistrano Valley High
• Kevin Cha, written word, $500, 7th grade, Alamitos Intermediate School
• Uriel Flores, TV ad, $1,000, 9th grade, Savanna High
• Patzi Garcia, written word, $500, 10th grade, Orange High School
Fermin Gomez, written word, $500, 10th grade, Capistrano Valley High School
Ariel Gonzales, TV ad, $500, 12th grade, Aliso Niguel High
• Emani Harris, written word, $500, 7th grade, Abraham Lincoln Middle School

Program: Remarks by students and campaign representatives are expected to address the importance of increasing college access, legislation promoting early commitment to college, and actions that students and families can take to raise awareness among state leaders about the need to increase college opportunity. Student entries will be on display and honorees recognized. 
More: A total of $100,000 in scholarships is being awarded by the nonprofit group to more than 100 students in California. The 8,000 students who submitted entries will receive certificates of recognition, college preparation materials and mystery prizes. In addition, their entries will be delivered to the governor and legislators whose districts include the students.
Background: The Campaign for College Opportunity was co-founded by the California Business Roundtable, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Community College League of California.
