Cal State Fullerton Program Supports Emancipated Foster Youth

October 3, 2007 :: No. 49

Recognizing promising, college-bound foster youth, the Guardian Scholars program at Cal State Fullerton welcomes 12 students this fall as the newest scholars. The seven freshman and five continuing/transfer students join 30 returning scholars.

More than just a scholarship, the Guardian Scholars program supports emancipated foster youth in their efforts to gain a college education. A working partnership among the private sector, foundations, public agencies and educational institutions, the program awards scholarships and provides personalized support for ambitious, college-bound foster youth who are making the challenging transition to adulthood.

The new freshmen and their majors are: Christopher Andrade of Los Angeles, political science; Cody Brown of Lone Pine, psychology; Nathalie Corbin of Orange, human services; Danny Martin of Inglewood, theatre arts; Simon Oh of Placentia, radio/TV/film; Onikah Porter of Riverside, psychology; and Kevin Villicana of Fresno, kinesiology.

On campus as continuing/transfer students are: junior Adam Bateman of Orange, psychology; sophomore Abel Duarte of Anaheim Hills, biochemistry; junior Desiree Galton of Huntington Beach, business; junior Selendra Gomez of Santa Monica, sociology; and junior Martha Torres of Garden Grove, human services.
