Cal State Fullerton Business Professor Elected To Lead Statewide Academic Senate

May 21, 2007 :: No. 214

Barry A. Pasternack, chair and professor of management systems and decision sciences at Cal State Fullerton, has been elected chair of the California State University Academic Senate.

For the past year, he has been serving as vice chair of the statewide group that recommends academic policies to the CSU Board of Trustees and chancellor. The CSU, with more than 22,400 faculty members and 23 campuses, is the nation’s largest university system.

A member of the Cal State Fullerton faculty since 1977, Pasternack has served on the university’s Academic Senate since 1989 and the statewide senate since 1996.

He has been a member of several CSU committees, including those addressing year-round operations, fiscal and governmental affairs and honorary degrees. Since 1997, he has been a member of the CSU Commission on Institutional Management and Information Technology and served on the Committee on Student-Friendly Services Through Technology, as well as the California Education Technology Initiative Infrastructure Task Force.

On the campus level, he has been secretary, treasurer and a member of the Academic Senate Executive Committee. In addition, Pasternack has served on university committees dealing with fundraising, bookstore operations, extended education, information technology and research. Department chair since 1995, Pasternack also led the College of Business Academic Senate for two terms in the 1980s, served as president of the Fullerton Chapter of the California Faculty Association from 1989 to 1994 and 1995 to 1996, and served on the CFA statewide board of directors for three years.

Pasternack has co-authored a number of publications, including the 1998 book “Applied Management Science: Modeling, Spreadsheet Analysis and Communications for Decision Making” and “Applied Management Science: A Computer-Integrated Managerial Approach” published in 1998. Articles he has written have appeared in Marketing Science, Journal of the Operational Research Society and Naval Research Logistics.

The Santa Ana resident earned his doctorate in operations research and industrial engineering from UC Berkeley.

The CSU Academic Senate is composed of elected academic senators representing the 23 campuses of the CSU. It was formed in 1963 to serve as an advisory group to the CSU’s chancellor and board of trustees.

In addition to Pasternack, J. Vincent Buck, emeritus professor of political science, and Diana W. Guerin, professor of child and adolescent studies, also represent Cal State Fullerton on the statewide board.
