Background:

STEPPING OUT was first staged in London at the Duke of York Theatre in 1984, and ran for more than 1000 performances after its premiere.  This comedy, by Richard Harris, chronicles a few months of a beginning tap dance class.  The Americanized movie version premiered in 1991, and starred Liza Minelli as the dance instructor.

Featuring a large ensemble cast, STEPPING OUT tells the story of eight students and their instructor who meet in a dingy North London church hall once a week to learn tap dancing. The students, seven women and one man, all have varied abilities as well as reasons for being there. There’s Maxine, a confident and fast-talking saleswoman, who is attending on doctor’s orders; Andy, a self-sacrificing wife with little dance skills; Vera, the catty snob; Geoffrey, the shy and quiet widower; and Mavis, their patient and long-suffering instructor. STEPPING OUT shows the evolution of this diverse class, as they struggle to overcome their differences and put together a final showcase performance as an ensemble.  This comedy shows the value of perseverance and enthusiasm, regardless of left feet.

The designers are Lindsey Gassaway – scenic design, Deborah Dufour –costume design, Katy Streeter – lighting design, Julie Maxham – makeup design, and John Fisher and Ray Gibson are sound designers.
