CSUF Hosts California World History Association Conference Nov. 16-17
Noted Historians Deliver Keynote Addresses

Nov. 13, 2007 :: No. 104

The California World History Association (CWHA) will hold its first conference Nov. 16-17 at Cal State Fullerton.

World historian Craig Lockard, Rosenberg professor of history at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, and author of the recently published “Societies, Networks, and Transitions: A Global History” and a number of monographs on Asian history, will deliver the keynote address Friday, Nov. 16. Felipe Fernández-Armesto, Prince of Asturias professor at Tufts University and author of a wide variety of monographs on world and European history, as well as the 2006 book “The World: A History,” will be the keynote speaker Saturday, Nov. 17.

In addition to the keynote addresses, the conference will feature a series of roundtables and panels designed for secondary school and college teachers featuring other world historians, — such as Cynthia Brown of Dominican University and David Christian and Ross Dunn, both of San Diego State University — as well as a book exhibit, banquets and a closing reception, said Gayle K. Brunelle, CWHA president and CSUF professor of history. The program will be held in the Titan Student Union and the Fullerton Marriott.

Some of the panel topics include “Museums and Memory”; “Politics, Structures and World History”; and “Alternative Narratives: Women, Reform and Colonialism.”

“Students who are planning to teach world history at any level are especially encouraged to attend and meet some of the people who write the world history textbooks they used in class or will soon be teaching themselves,” Brunelle said.

Students may register for the conference for $10 and receive a one-year CWHA membership. For more information, visit www.csulb.edu/~ssayeghc/cwha.htm or email Brunelle at gbrunelle@fullerton.edu.

Conference sponsors are Cal State Fullerton’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences, History Department and Southern California Consortium on International Studies.
