Homeless People Count
Volunteers needed for a special effort to count the homeless in Orange County on January 25

December 5, 2006 :: No. 93

Cal State Fullerton’s Social Science Research Center (SSRC) is supporting an effort to count and survey the homeless population in Orange County, and more than 1,000 volunteers are needed.

Those who want to volunteer are urged to sign up for duty by Friday, Dec. 15.

Volunteers will count the homeless Jan. 25 from 7 p.m. to midnight on the streets and in shelters throughout Orange County. On Jan. 26, volunteers will collect a variety of data by interviewing homeless people at Orange County soup kitchens, drop-in centers, parks and other outdoor locations.

Training sessions will be offered throughout this month and in January to prepare volunteers for the survey.

Dec. 15 is the deadline to submit an application form by e-mail to Mary Schwartz at OC Partnership at mary.schwartz@ocpartnership.net to participate as a volunteer.

The SSRC is conducting the Point-in-Time project in partnership with the County of Orange, 2-1-1 Orange County and OC Partnership. This is the partnership’s second biennial countywide homeless survey, or Point-in-Time count. The purpose of the count is to help confirm the need for funds that help the homeless throughout the county.

More details about the project can be found at www.pointintimeoc.org. Additional information is available from Karen Roper, executive director of the county’s Office on Aging and Homeless Prevention, at (714) 567-7418 or Karen.Roper@csa.ocgov.com, or from Jennifer Lee-Anderson at (949) 764-1305 or jlanderson@211oc.org.
