Religion and Science: Harmony or Discord?
Cal State Fullerton to host interfaith event Nov. 5.

October 31. 2006 :: No. 60

Cal State Fullerton will host the 13th annual Orange County Religious Diversity Forum from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, at the university’s Ruby Gerontology Center.

The theme of this year’s event is “Religion and Science: Harmony or Discord?” and will feature keynote speaker Bruce Weber, emeritus professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Cal State Fullerton. Weber will discuss “Complexity Theory: Changing the Conversation Between Religion and Science.”

Two panel discussions will follow. Topics of these panels include:

  • How do religious traditions view stem cell research, cloning and related issues?
  • How much progress are women making towards religious equality?
  • How do religious traditions seek to promote non-violence?
  • What is religion’s role in physical healing?

Each panel discussion will feature three or four representatives of different faith traditions. They include Buddhists, Lutherans, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Baha’is, Seventh-day Adventists and Christian Scientists.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. and will include a Native American blessing ceremony. Fees are $15 for the public and $5 for students. Sandwiches and beverages will be available. The sponsors of the event are the Department of Comparative Religion at Cal State Fullerton and the UCI Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity.

Additional information is available from: Benjamin Hubbard, emeritus professor of comparative religion and event coordinator, at bhubbard@fullerton.edu; Prany Sananikon at psananik@uci.edu; and the Religious Diversity Forum website at www.religiousdiversityfaire.org
