June 19, 2006 :: No. 282

Who/What: Innovators who dream of building a better mousetrap may be among the junior high and high school students gathering Saturday at Cal State Fullerton to race their mousetrap-powered cars in the MESA National Engineering Design Competition.
When/Where:

Saturday, June 24
12:30-2:30 p.m. — vehicle trials in Titan Gym
10-11:30 a.m. — oral presentations in the Gabrielino, Alvarado and Ontiveros rooms of the Titan Student Union

Additional:

Students from Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) programs in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Maryland will compete to see whose vehicle:
• has the fastest elapsed time over a 10-meter distance
• stops closest to a target placed five meters from the start line
• travels the greatest distance up a ramp with a 30-degree incline

All students attending the event have competed in local events. Representatives from such area companies as JPL, Boeing, AT&T, Engineering Resources of Southern California, the DWP and Hensel Phelps will serve as judges.

The statewide MESA program is designed to help educationally disadvantaged students excel in math and science. The program at Cal State Fullerton has been assisting students for more than 25 years.
