Conference on Empathy at CSUF June 22-23

June 15, 2006 :: No. 279

What:

Empathy will be the topic of discussion at an upcoming conference at Cal State Fullerton. Among the questions to be addressed: What is empathy? What role does empathy play with fiction? How do you determine whether attempts to empathize are successful? Also, what role does empathy play in social and moral life?

When: June 22-23
Where: Fullerton Marriott at Cal State Fullerton
Why: “The purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for scholars from different disciplines to come together to discuss and debate the topic of empathy, which is relevant to human experience in many ways,” said Amy Coplan, assistant professor of philosophy at CSUF and a conference host. “Philosophers and psychologists are interested in how empathy works and if it provides a unique kind of knowledge or understanding.”
Keynotes: The scheduled keynote speakers are Noel Carroll, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Temple University, and Paul L. Harris, professor of education at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. Additional speakers include Coplan, other CSUF faculty members, as well as professors from the universities of Nottingham, Auckland, North Carolina, Manchester and Michigan, and New York University.
Sponsors: Cal State Fullerton, American Society for Aesthetics, British Society of Aesthetics
Cost: Registration is $50-$100 for the general public. Cal State Fullerton students, staff and faculty members can attend free of charge.
